Why Can’t I Remember To Be A Pothead?

I know this little Rastafarian type character with dreadlocks, who lives and breathes marijuana, literally. Given half an opening, he will opine adnauseam as to the multifarious benefits of the private and commercial uses of the “weed.” In short, Rasti thinks that marijuana is the potential savior of the world.

Now there is a news release that the active ingredient in marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC, addresses more efficiently than current medical products certain factors in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana’s active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.

THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

Now before Rasti and his friends get up on the soapbox and pontificate on yet another benefit of smoking weed, the administration of THC in a pharmaceutical format is far preferable than the associated side effects of smoking. Unfortunately, it is not as cheap.

Rasti believes that the reason that widespread marijuana usage is prohibited is because “they” want to oppress the “people.” The truth of the matter is that a society chronically on marijuana is not a highly productive society. Who cares about working hard when you could just sit around and toke up? Say, maybe Rasti is on to something here. Now, how can we get the Islamists to take up the joint and put down the sword?
