USS Oriskany Death and Rebirth

The USS Oriskany, an 888-foot aircraft carrier, was begun to be built1944 and she was commissioned in 1950. During her long service, many thousands of Americans called her home and many a pilot gave thanks to be able to return to safety by going wheels down on her grand flight deck.

The USS Oriskany was decommissioned in 1975. Time has done what neither accident nor foe could do by sending this battleship to the bottom of the sea. The USS Oriskany has become the first battleship deliberately sunk to become an artificial reef off the coast of Florida. In a sense, she has triumphed over death to be reborn as a haven and breeding ground for countless marine animals and plants.

The photo is of a plane from the USS Oriskany, which is now displayed on the USS Midway in San Diego.

Update 5/22/06: Go here for photos of the sinking.
