Hugh Hewitt Misses the “Crazy” Boat

On his radio show today, Hewitt was in a discussion about the ill-advised comments of Rep. Tom Tancredo on the merit, or lack thereof, of a nuclear deterrent policy as it pertains to Islamo-Fascists. Hugh argued that there was no deterrent potential because these people are “crazy.”

Merriam-Webster Online:
Main Entry: 1cra·zy Pronunciation: 'krA-zEFunction: adjectiveInflected Form(s): cra·zi·er; -est

1 a : full of cracks or flaws : UNSOUND b : CROOKED, ASKEW

2 a : MAD, INSANE b (1) : IMPRACTICAL (2) : ERRATIC c : being out of the ordinary : UNUSUAL

3 a : distracted with desire or excitement
b : absurdly fond : INFATUATED c : passionately preoccupied : OBSESSED

Say what you may about Islamo-Fascists, but as a group they can not be fairly characterized as crazy. They are rational, practical people with an agenda built on a philosophical platform totally alien to ours.

I suspect that the threat of, or the actual act of, wiping out Mecca would play into the Islamo-Fascist’s hands. As a practical matter it’s nutty idea since most Islamists are not fascist. That’s like saying you would nuke the Vatican because of some splinter group of Catholics was causing havoc.

So I agree with Hewitt on the nuclear deterrent issue, but disagree on the crazy statement.
