My Friend’s Rant on New Orleans

From my friend Bob,

I have now watched several nights of news regarding the disastrous circumstances in the South East. It seems to me that as many people are trying to figure out a way to donate their hard earned money to the victims of Katrina. Instead that I am thoroughly disgusted with the behavior demonstrated by many of those that are being shown by the media.

Where did we go wrong? What have we done to take away dignity from generations of people who apparently no longer do anything for themselves. What have we done that would cause a segment of our society to completely trash a place of refuge (the Super dome) and within 48 hrs. turn it into a place that is to dangerous and to filthy with human excrement and urine to be tolerated by the people that have no where else to go.

How can a portion of this society behave in such a violent manner that Doctors and Medical volunteers have to flee for their own safety. Did you see the trash, have you heard of the violence, the murder, the rapes. My God!

Certainly there are those whose plight tugs at my heart and I think that we should do anything to help them. But for what seems to me far too great a percentage of the people that were affected by this hurricane, I personally find their conduct to be disgusting and repugnant.

Can anyone explain the looting by citizens and even sworn police officers and their indifferent attitude when caught red handed.

Since when are people in need allowed to shout demands and threaten violence to get what they want. Is that how we ask for help? I thought we did not respond to terrorist threats in this great county.

Katrina is no doubt a catastrophic event, but far more serious problems are in our future if we continue to allow this direction that a segment of our society has taken to be tolerated.

Isn't there any journalist in any media market that is willing to call it the way it is.

There, I feel a little better. Bob
